これまでの投稿を拝見しまして、耳カットを良く理解していない獣医師がまだたくさんいることを知り、とても残念に思いました。私は獣医師ですがTNRにも実際に参加したり、またそういう活動をしている方からご相談を受けることも多いので、TNRのTがどれだけ大変か良く理解しているつもりです。

捕獲のご経験のない先生方、想像してみて下さい。
前日からご近所にピンポンして趣旨を説明して、捕獲しやすくするため餌やりをしないように依頼し、数人で多くの時間を費やし、やっとの思いで捕獲をして、動物病院には指定された時間に、友人にお願いして乗せて行ってもらい、術前検査をして、麻酔をかけてみたら、アレ？ということで引き取りに行ってごめんなさいして、リリース。
どれだけの労力と時間、お金を無駄にするか。
病院にしてみれば、検査の手間、麻酔薬、手術の滅菌、病院スタッフの労力。別の手術を入れることができたかもしれません。
他の場所で捕獲していれば救える命もあったかもしれません。

どうせ捕獲するならマイクロチップがベストと仰る方もおりますが、捕獲が一番大変なんです。捕獲せずに識別する方法を考える必要があります。首輪は汚れ、傷みます。子猫のときに手術する場合も首輪ですか？ネームプレートやピアスは外れます。入れ墨は相当近寄らないと（捕獲しないと）わかりません。奇跡的に正面、右側面、左側面の写真を撮れたとしても誰が管理しますか？現実的ではありませんよね。

日々、不幸な猫が生まれ、多くの命が殺処分されています。
耳カットで化膿して具合が悪くなる可能性は限りなく低いです。
不幸な猫、処分される猫が増えないように、多くの獣医師の先生方に一層のご協力をお願いしたいです。

Ear tipping

Once a cat has been treated and neutered it needs to be marked to show that this has been done so that workers can avoid catching it again and repeating the procedure. While it is fairly easy to identify a neutered male if you can get fairly close, it is almost impossible to ascertain whether female cats have been neutered – hair growth over what was probably a very small scar anyway can make previous surgery almost invisible. It may be possible to see with a trapped male but it is not so easy with a female and it is a waste of resources and unfair to the cat to re-operate. The internationally recognised way of marking the neutered cats is to perform ear tipping while the animal is under anaesthesia. This involves cutting 6-10 mm (1/4"-1/2") off the tip of the left ear with a straight cut. It is important to be as straight as possible, running parallel to the base of the ear, and not a v-notch or curved cut. The left ear is always used. This does not cause the cat significant distress (and actually bleeds very little when done) and visibly identifies neutered cats even from a distance.

The aim of ear-tipping

The aim of marking feral cats at castration or spaying is to make them easily identifiable as neutered. The actual amount cut off is based on:
Not removing too much of the pinna as then the ear look 'cropped' and is aesthetically unacceptable to the cat feeders
If too little is removed, the cat will not be identifiable at a distance
If the cut is not straight, the silhouette is not distinctive enough
The aim should be clear recognition, through binoculars if necessary, at 20 metres. If an ear-tipped cat is trapped in error, it will be identifiable within the trap and can be released.

Other methods of identification such as microchipping or tattooing are less practical as the cat would have to be examined closely to detect them. Microchipping can be useful if a group of ferals is being studied over a period of time but they need to be caught first! These methods are also more costly and should only be used in addition to ear-tipping.
